Jesus Christ is the very Son of God. He was in the beginning with God because He is God. He is the one who is in the very bosom of the Father; the One whom the Father loves. The One who reveals the Father’s heart to all creation. And yet, Jesus is the one who has given us a right to become children of God. So, now it is not Jesus alone who is in the bosom of His Heavenly Father, but all we who have become God’s children rest in his sweet embrace.
This great mystery no one else in God’s creation can claim for themselves. Even the angels, who stand above man constantly in the presence of God, whose power might seem greater than any man can imagine, even they do not taste of this same delight as man does. It is only man that is made in God’s image; and only man’s nature which God chose to take upon Himself.
Because God’s children are His own, He will certainly take great care of them. Wants or needs, loves or desires, all these He will fulfill. Even the present dangers and perils cannot harm His beloved except to strengthen their faith and exercise the trust of these little ones. Sometimes this will be a faith statement and sometimes it will be a sight statement; sometimes God’s tender Fatherly care will be apparent and other times hidden. But it’s substance will never change because He is the Father who is in heaven.
The children of God can rest in this sure foundation: they will never be seperated from the love of their Father in Christ Jesus. Nothing will pluck them out of Jesus’ hand. The children of God should be constantly reminded that their Father has chosen them and pre-ordained their lives even before the foundation of the world. Each and everyone who has heard the Gospel has been singularly picked out by God to come to faith, be given the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and be confirmed in the love of God to eternity. Because God has chosen them, they cannot fall away or be cast out from His tender embrace.
So they need not fear or be given into despair. They can confidently say that their Father gives and takes away out of His good and gracious will. If He should take something away, how can I complain when He has given me so much that is good? He knows what’s best for me. How can a momentary trial compare to the everlasting love of Christ that exceeds any height or depth imaginable? Such is the tender heart of the Father who gathers all His children to himself.
